Finding a quality women’s tank top that is both ready for an adventure and a zoom meeting is no easy task! The Title Nine Phoenix Tank Top is lightweight enough for a humid trail run while professionally cut for client meetings. We’ll dig into the details below but it’s no surprise that Title Nine has dialled in a top-notch, practical tank top!
I was immediately impressed by the colour – a rich blue/purple called rainstorm with a delicate texture matches EVERYTHING perfectly. The delicate texture reminds me of clouds in the sky, bringing the outdoors with me everywhere I go. The fabric is soft and light, when worn lose it’s barely there. Will this be a key element to my small, RV life wardrobe – yes.
Let’s Get Acquainted
The Phoenix Tank Top is designed by women for women, so it’s no surprise that it’s a stylish look with very practical functions. The wide straps allow full bra-strap coverage, which for us chesty gals is a refreshing change! The boxy cut helps us curvy girls not show the rolls while still allowing those desiring a tighter fit, the back tie option. The pleated back is tasteful for all ages as well as uses. Not showing too much skin while still providing a stylish element.
With the Phoenix Tank Top, it’s easy to meet with clients, run to town and then jump on the paddleboard without having to change three times! Talk about a time saver for busy women. Add on the Stinkstopper and I can wear this top for DAYS (which is helpful when you don’t have a washing machine) and not be worried I’m gonna offend someone’s nose.
Specs
Relaxed Fit
Described as ‘boxy’ in many reviews, the Phoenix Tank Top is a loose-cut top falling straight down from your boobs. This relaxed fit to me is very comfortable – it allows airflow and ease of movement while still providing good coverage. With 3 1/2″ straps, the bra strap coverage is GREAT for those of us who wear DD+ bras without cute straps!
One note about the fit is it does run a bit shorter than the tops I usually wear. The Phoenix tank top ( in medium) is just 22″ long in the front, and while the length is 100% a personal preference, I prefer tops that are 25″ or longer. I think this tank top pairs best with higher-waisted bottoms if you prefer full tummy coverage.
Polyester/Spandex Blend
Polyester gets some mixed reviews in the gear world. Being a quick-dry fabric that’s fairly durable and also wrinkle and shrink resistant – it’s great for active and travel wear. Its cons, though, are that over time, the fabric gets stinky and it’s a stink you can’t get rid of. Since polyester is made of plastic, it’s also temperature-sensitive and flammable – so no hot ironing or campfire flankers on this shirt. But the biggest downside (IMO) is the microplastics – which we all need to be conscious about moving forward.
StinkStopper™
So since the poly/spandex blend normally gets stinky, Title Nine has included a StinkStopper™ treatment. While handy for the first few months, the treatment does tend to become less effective the more it’s washed. I have had this tank top for about a month, worn it 3-4 times a week, sweated profusely and haven’t washed it yet. Yes, it works. I do appreciate this feature in the summers when we live in our RV since I don’t have to wash it as often.
In writing this post, I was curious as to what StinkStopper™ is made of. I couldn’t find any info about it, then ended up down a chemical rabbit hole. For the purpose of this post, I will assume StinkStopper™ is either triclosan and triclocarban. That’s because these are the two main antimicrobial chemicals used to treat clothing. The garment industry strikes again! These chemicals are concerning both from a wearer’s perspective and an environmental perspective. You can opt to learn more here cuz that’s a whole thing I didn’t mean to rain on your parade about.
Having had other chemically treated clothing, I can say that this StinkStopper™ treatment likely won’t last. Like many other clothing treatments (like waterproofing) it wears off over time and does need to be re-applied. Will StinkStopper™ still be effective a year from now? Not likely, unless you never wash the shirt!
Fit
As a 5’5″, 150-pound woman, I usually wear a medium. The Phoenix Tank Top, in a medium, fit as expected. I like the wider straps, square cut and high neckline. The backside slit allows one to tie the back closed and opt for a more fitted look.
As mentioned before, I find this top runs short (22″ long). When wearing a pack with a waist belt, it was hard to keep the top down. This lead to pack-on-skin rubbing and an uncomfortable hike. I won’t be using it for hiking or rock climbing as it’s not long enough for me.
Title Nine Phoenix Tank Top Review Summary
I have been out running, biking, stand-up paddleboarding in the Phoenix Tank Top. I have also been working day-to-day for Peak Flow OBM and got compliments from clients over zoom. Big picture, it’s a great tank top.
Could it be better for our health and the environment? Certainly!
Should you buy one for yourself – depends on what you value. Do you want a cute, functional top or the wellness of your microbiome and the planet?
I have one because it’s practical and great for digital nomad life. Would I buy 4, definitely not. Can I afford all merino clothing, definitely not.
So it’s all about balancing the choices, your needs, your desired impact on the planet and your bank balance. Is the Phoenix Tank Top a valued piece of my small RV wardrobe? It certainly is!
