Small Group Ideas To Get You Outdoors

Travel restrictions are lifting and we’re all anxious to get out. This post includes small group ideas to get you outdoors in a new, interesting way.

Hopefully you have been using this time to do gear maintenance, search for used or new gear, do research for a bucket list adventure or train for something epic. Once the lock down lifts, you’ll want to be ready to adventure!

Playing outside this summer may be different from past summers but that doesn’t mean it can’t still be a blast. Small groups will be the way to go for 2020 and perhaps it’s time to try something new.

Before you Go

Check open status of all parks, beaches and facilities before you head out.

National Parks:Opening dates, visitor access and services will vary across the country depending on the measures in place in each province and territory. Visit their website regularly for the latest COVID-19-related information.

Provincial Parks:Review the park websites or call ahead to ask what restrictions are in place.

Campgrounds:will be re-opening so look to each ones website or call for details. Here’s a helpful post about Campground Etiquette.

Try Geocaching

The famed ‘Worlds Largest Treasure Hunt’, Geocaching is a fun games to add to your daily walks or hikes. Great for all ages, this can be motivation to get your kids outdoors and on the go this summer.

Hike a New Trail

With a shiny new copy of Hikes of Newfoundland, why not pick a new trail to hike? Hiking easily allows for physical distancing and is best in small groups. Go prepared by watching our ‘Take Your First Hike Challenge‘ virtual workshop!

Shred the Bike Trails

Download TrailForks and find out where the bike trails are. Riding a bike is a fun way to re-discover your favourite hiking trails as well as new trails designed just for 2 wheels.

Climb a New Route

The West Coast Climbing group is collecting donations to build new climbing routes. The organizers are focusing on re-bolting old routes, developing intermediate leads routes and establishing new routes at new sites. Word is there’s even a multi-pitch in the works!

Paddle

Take up Bird Watching

Check out our post about find the right pair of compact binoculars and either grab a copy of your local field guide (like these for Newfoundland) or download the Merlin Bird ID app. Watch for regulars in your backyard, start a log book to track your sightings, and if you have kids, get them using their science skills to ID and make the records.
