Food and drink are a big part of travel and can make or break a trip or destination for most people. Being a Tour Guide in Western Newfoundland, a big part of my job is to know where the good food is at. I hope these Tips for Great Food in Western Newfoundland will help you make the most of your culinary experience!
Today’s travellers want to eat fresh, local food that is full flavoured and healthy. They want to taste the sea, the land and the culture. They want to feel good about putting it in their bodies and spending the money on it.
I am also encountering more and more dietary concerns such as gluten free, dairy free, and allergies. Most restaurants on the island do not have many options for these. The places that are making an effort to accommodate these needs are listed here.
I am SO thankful that Western Newfoundland has stepped up it’s food game in the last few years and now offers a nice selection of quality dining options. Listed below are some of my “go to” places with clients and when I’m looking for a great meal. In geographical order;
Southcoast
Danny’s Bakery – Stephenville
Be sure to try the fresh bread and if you have a sweet tooth, Danny’s will have a good selection of treats!
Humber Valley
Rinda’s Kitchen – Corner Brook
Authentic Thai Food with amazing flavours, fresh ingredients and some of the friendliest staff in town.
Newfound Sushi – Corner Brook
Always fresh. Classic sushi and some with a Newfoundland twist.
Best Coast Cafe – Corner Brook
Literally, the BEST place for breakfast in all of western NL! Arrive early, or the locals will have ya beat.
Sorento- Corner Brook
This is the ONLY place I eat pizza in Corner Brook! Homemade dough, sauce and fresh toppings = YUM!
Brewed Awakening- Corner Brook
Love breakfasts here! Try the wrap with egg, spinach and hot sauce with your double Canadiana.
Harbour Grounds- Corner Brook
Our go to for panini’s and hearty child lunches.
Pho Vietnam- Corner Brook
Flavourful, fresh vietnamese food. Enough said!
Gros Morne Area
Seaside Restaurant – Trout River
Sea is in the name and sea food is their game.
The Blue Ocean Dining Room
For fine dining with high quality food and elegant atmosphere this is your best choice in Woody Point. Lobster Dumplings and Seafood Chowder are to die for!
Old Loft – Woody Point
Love the moose pie and house salad. Then try the partridge berry pie for dessert or take one to go.
Galliot Studios – Woody Point
This is where the espresso based coffee is at in Woody Point.
The Merchant Warehouse – Woody Point
With a 50’s diner theme, classic fish and chips is what to have here.
Black Spruce Restaurant – Neddies Harbour
With a unique Newfoundland twist on everything be sure to try the pistachio, spruce tip ice-cream!
Chantrelles – Norris Point
Lovely food all around. Their halibut special was awesome!
Java Jacks – Rocky Harbour
My go to for coffee and cake or a 3 course meal. Unique experience here as the restaurant is also an art gallery.
Northern Peninsula
Lightkeepers Restaurant – St.Anthony
The place for sea food on the N.Pen. Hike the nearby trails before or after your meal.
The Norseman Restaurant – L’anse aux Meadows
Fine dining experienced no where else on the peninsula! You’re welcome!
By no means is this list exhaustive, I haven’t eaten everywhere (yet;) but instead this list highlights a few places I enjoy and know I can take guests to or recommend to visitors.
