40 Things to Do in Western Newfoundland

The wild and rugged coast of Western Newfoundland is full of awe-inspiring things to see, do and experience. Take the road less traveled in this tranquil corner of Canada and discover a piece of paradise like no other. 1. Watch the sunset from Three Bear Mountain in Corner Brook

Only a 5-10 minute walk from West Street!

2. Swim or Float around Tippings Pond

This is particularly beautiful at sunrise

A popular spot to swim or float or paddle around in the summer. Check this place out as the sun rises after a cold night, it’s totally worth the early rise.

4. Do your first backcountry hike

There are so many great backcountry hikes here on the West Coast. Check out the book “Hikes of Western Newfoundland” for trip ideas! It can be bought at many of our local stores including Coles bookstore. Our favorite hikes are the Blow Me Downs Traverse and Lewis Hills Traverse but there are many great hikes out there to get started. 5. Check out Corner Brook’s mountain biking trails

Corner Brook’s mountain bike scene keeps getting better and better each year. There’s a Tuesday night co-ed ride that starts at the Ginger route at 6:15 every week and a Friday night womens’ ride that is organized through the Women Cycling on the West Coast of Newfoundland and Labrador Facebook page most weeks. 6. Rent a paddle board in Norris Point

Talk to Gros Morne Adventures or Gros Morne Outdoor about booking a rental or tour! Gros Morne Outdoor organizes a Friday night group sunset paddle every week, check out their Instagram for weather or cancellation updates.

7. Check out the lovely coast in Bottle Cove

Amazing sunsets and the ultimate place for a picnic. If you have the time, check out the South head light house trail while you’re there.

Located in Woody Point with a deck right on the water front. Open Saturdays and Sundays and some select days in between! Best grilled cheese you’ll ever have!

15. Paddle and Yoga!

Paddle to the resettled community of Gadd’s Cove with Gros Morne Adventures and do yoga with Megan Humphrey Yoga! Megan also does classes at Bartlett’s Point Park and yoga on the rooftop at Hew and Draw. Check out her Facebook page to find out what’s coming up.

16. Bike/Drive the Port au Port loop

17. Bring your own kayak & kayak with seals in St. Pauls inlet

Note: Always check the weather before going as the swell can get pretty rough here at times.

18. Bring your own paddle board/kayak and paddle the side streams of the Humber River

Other breweries to check out are Roughwater Brewing in Deer Lake, Secret Cove Brewing in Port au Port, and Crooked Feeder Brewing in Cormack.

21. Grab dinner and a beer at Hew and Draw

Hew and Draw is Corner Brook’s newest boutique hotel,  Best Coast restaurant, and Boomstick brewing co. all in one! A beautiful place to eat or stay when you’re in the area. They also host rooftop yoga every other Wednesday, so book your spot now!

Side note: Best Coast Cafe on Broadway is also a local brunch spot favorite!

22. Take a hike in Gros Morne National Park!

There are so many great trails in the park! Some of our favorites include Green Gardens, Tablelands, and Trout River Pond. Other great trails in the park include the Look Out trail, the Coastal Trail, Gros Morne Mountain, and many more!

23. Do a hike down the bay from Corner Brook

24. Check out a resettled town

Newfoundland has over 600 resettled communities in some of the coolest corners of the province. Round Harbour is one of our favorites to visit.

23. Check out an outport community you’ve never been to before

Within two to three hours’ drive from Corner Brook, there are many great communities to visit. Check out the lighthouse in Rose Blanche, the waterfront in Isle Aux Morts or the sandy beaches in Burgeo just to name a few.

24. Check out the Saltbox restaurant and use their VR setup to choose your next hike!

From exploring the limestone barrens, archeology, fossils, and caribou in Port au Choix, to the sandy beaches of Shallow Bay,  to the Viking settlement in L’Anse aux Meadows, there are lots of attractions to see along the way.

A great beach to swim and play close to Corner Brook. Additionally, if you ever have extra time for beach loungin’, check out the beaches in Sand Banks Provincial Park in Burgeo.

35. Go car camping

There are so many campgrounds still open for business with limited compacity. Check out Barachois Provincial Park, Sand Banks Provincial Park, Prince Edward Park, or any other great campgrounds in the area.
